Boron at the End of the Rainbow

We may not have thought so at the time, but one of dad's later photos does get a grin from most everyone showing Boron as the end of the rainbow.

Donkey Punch - The Donkey That Loved Acme Beer

E-mail Print PDF
Back in the 40's at Four Corners (Kramer Junction), there was a donkey that lived next to the bar and drank Acme beer.Back in the 40's at Four Corners, (where 395 crossed 466), there was a jackass (male donkey) that lived next to the bar. This animal loved beer (I think Acme was his favorite). Anyway, when given a bottle of beer, he would hold it in his teeth, throw his head back and guzzle! I was fascinated but couldn't buy him any.  So I did the next best thing and bought him root beer! Well he took the bottle threw his head back and SPIT the bottle and frothy root beer out.   He’s not the only one who loved Acme Beer! The beer drinking donkey isn't the only one who loves beer. Jack Collins' dog Duchess likes Acme too.

Camp Boron Compass Lines

E-mail Print PDF

Jack Collins is correct in stating that the mine camp was laid out on "compass lines," that is, east-west, and north-south. However, north is not at the bottom of the picture, as he states. The RR tracks, which run across the picture from upper right to lower left, run east-west through the camp. Therefore, north is at 90 degrees to the tracks, namely, at a 45 degree angle to the upper part of the view. The shadows of the light poles and smoke stacks point to the west of north; the sun was to the southeast when the photo was taken. The three-story building is the old office building, where I used to stay and work in the 50's and the building off the SW edge is the mess hall, where Danny Cooper's mother used to serve me a huge breakfast for $1.00. I believe that the recreation  hall is the building just to the east of the mess hall. Saddleback Mountain, the prominent landmark in the area, is to the east. Keep the photos coming.
