Alan Ladd Mobbed by Boron Fans

E-mail Print PDF

Hollywood actor Alan Ladd mobbed by fans at Boron CaliforniaBetty, the lady in the dark sweater and dark glasses seen just over Alan Ladd's shoulder, is my sister-in-law Sally Gonzales, whose late husband was Frank Gonzales (my husband, Pete Lopez's brother). Frank worked at Boron for many years in a number of management positions.  I was pleasantly surprised to see her, but I was one of the many many on site spectators during the filming of that movie.  Sally currently lives in a senior complex in Lancaster, Ca., and is doing well.

Ice From the High Sierra to the Mojave Desert

E-mail Print PDF

Electrolux Servell brand icebox circa 1930's - It's Silence Saves You Money!Something else about Ice boxes: We had delivery of blocks of ice in the summertime. It came from the Sierras where frozen lakes were sawed into blocks during the winter and trucked down to the desert in the summer. I remember running after the iceman asking for a chunk. I still love to eat ice. We got our first refrigerator in the 30's. It was a big thing on 4 legs and a cylindrical radiator on top, then came the Swedish model a Servell that ran on gas. No moving parts! I remember Grandma had a washing machine that had a crank wringer on top and I got to crank it! I never remember her getting anything caught, like they laughed about.

How The Boron Plant Was Laid Out

E-mail Print PDF

The mine was laid out on compass lines. The road that goes out of the picture upper left is going East to Beverly Hills and the dump. Saddleback Mountain (90-degrees clock wise) is South, where the City of Boron and machine gun and bombing ranges were located. 90 degrees more is West, Mojave and the Tehachapi mountains. At the bottom of the picture it is North with the wells Randsberg, Inyokern, and Trona. The dispensary and home for the Company nurse is visible on the right of the office building with the water tower in the background.Steward Sims: Since I wasn't there, it'd really help if someone could tell me which way's north in this picture.  The only thing I can pick out is the "three-story" building.

Jack Collins: The mine was laid out on compass lines.

The dispensary and home for the Company nurse is visible on the right of the office building with the water tower in the background.   There was one nurse, a single mother named Connabell with a herd of goats and a daughter name Anabell.  Anabell was the recording secretary for the school newspaper, and Freddy and I were co-editors. Our office was the saving stamp booth, which handled sales of "war bonds and stamps". After the Connabells left, Johnny Hallor and his wife moved in. It was at that softball field I learned my first Spanish.  A small Hispanic boy would come up and say "Quiero combate" then he'd hit me!
