Desert Refrigeration

E-mail Print PDF
I remember that one of the ways to get some cool air into the house was to hang a burlap covering over a window and soak the burlap with water so when the desert wind blew through it, there was some relief from the heat.  This same burlap system was used for keeping food reasonably cool.  A screened box, covered with burlap was placed in a window or other area and a saucer with an open jug of water upside down was placed on top.  Strips of burlap were used to siphon the water from the saucer onto the burlap to keep it damp. When the wind blew through it, food was kept reasonably cool.  There were no refrigerators at that time and ice blocks for an icebox were very scarce.  Really had to rough it in those days, huh!!

Jack Collins and Bill Mullins at the Well

Bill and Jack Mullins (brothers) used to be caretakers of the wells before my Grandfather (Leonard Pruett & Minnie Pruett) moved there. My Grandpa was still the caretaker at the wells when he passed away at 94.
